SECOND PLACE: NETFLIX…  BELIEVE IT OR NOT, Netflix is a noted horror streaming service.

Constantly raising their streaming prices, Netflix isn’t the best horror sreaming company, but I have been with them since 2008 so I’m locked-in at $4.99 a month.  A few months back they again raised the monthly price to stream. One of the most popular streaming companies in the U.S., their streaming subscription options offer two plans. The HD tier for $10.99 per month for new subscribers or $13.99 Ultra HD 4K format… and of course, who doesn’t want 4K?

Is Netflix worth $135.00 or $155.00 a year? I don’t believe so, as their curated horror films rarely include the classics or most popular movies. I suppose the kicker and argument for subscribing to Netflix is thier content! With movies form all genre’s, new subscribers can grab a 30-day trial of Netflix. Instantly watch unlimited TV episodes & movies on your TV, computer, cellphone and various mobile devices with this Netflix special offer.

  • Watch as much as you want and cancel any time
  • Stream instantly on your computer, smartphone, PS4, XBox One, Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku
  • Only $10.99 per month after trial, or upgrade to Standard or Premium for bonus features

THIRD PLACE – Frightpix

Frightpix is a subsidiary of Popcornflix, a FREE streaming service with four years under its belt. Unlike the above horror streaming services, Frightpix isn’t subscription-based, but is entirely ad-supported. The ads are what is killing them, nobody likes to get into a movie and then be interupted by an ad that pops up. The company has not responded to my requests for a free month in order to review their service. So…… what are they hiding? – RJ

That’s right fans! It’s FREE! FREE! FREE!

Executive Vice President David Fannon told Forbes Magazine that the service was founded because the demand for horror pictures was impossible to ignore. Horror films always perform very well,” he said. “It’s a great genre with a loyal following.”

The movies are categorized by genre, including Sexy Horror, Cult and an entire page devoted to the schlock movie studio Troma, of The Toxic Avenger fame. But a quick look of the available titles from FrightPix shows little in the way of familiar, mainstream horror films, and ugh! Those ads! What about all the people who don’t want to sit through them?

Fannon didn’t seem too worried about either consideration. He estimated that there were “more than a couple million unique visitors” through such platforms as mobile IOS, Apple Tv IV, the world-wide-web, Roku and XBOX 360.  He has a simple explanation for the service’s success.

“In the ad-supported space, we’re head and shoulders above the competition. We have better content and the quality’s better.”

Ah, but we here at Storyteller Entertainment wonder… will horror audiences at home sit through ad-interupted movies? We’re not sure. But, there you have it, if you don’t want to pay the small subscription fees of Screambox, Shudder or Full Moon Streaming, maybe this is it?
